SHORE SEINE EXCURSION ON THE LAKE MIEKOJÄRVI IN PELLO IN FINNISH LAPLAND
Join the professionals for a traditional seine excursion on Lake Miekojärvi on the Arctic Circle. The practice of professional seine fishing goes back five generations. Seine fishing is allowed during the open water season from June to the end of October. The goal is to catch salmonids like smelt and vendace. The trip starts on a Sirmet ferry, which acts as a shuttle across the lake. The seine fishermen arrive with their own equipment. The best sheltered sandy beach for the day is chosen by the wind and the desired catch. At a laavu (Finnish lean-to), fish from Miekojärvi are prepared as a snack during seine fishing. Gathered around a fire and surrounded by scenic landscapes, the guides offer a few stories about the history of fishing the lake and the current state of fishing here. During storms, we do not travel as it is not safe to cross the lake.
